Why "Bilingual" Is Not Enough in Healthcare
Federal law (Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act) requires providers that receive federal funds to offer qualified interpreters, and discourages relying on family members or untrained staff. Conversational Spanish is not the same as interpreting a consent form, a medication schedule or a diagnosis accurately. Regional vocabulary matters too: the same symptom can be described very differently by patients from Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean.
